Reader (actually many readers) ask[s]: WHY TWELVE, in new Primal 12 program?
When I set out to do program design for this cutting edge strength & mobility system Primal 12, I identified 12 different sport specific skills needed to perform vinyasa yoga safely and injury free. Those functional fitness attributes (not limited to yoga) are:
1. Leg endurance 7. Warrior 2 Variations (lateral movement)
2. Core endurance 8. Lateral Bending (trunk flexibility)
3. Single leg balance 9. Headstand prep
4. Upper Body Endurance 10. Twisting
5. Hamstring Flexibility 11. Arm Balancing
6. Glute & Core Strength 12. Shoulder Flexibility and Chest Opening
So I set out to program a workout at 3 different levels for each of these sport specific skills, and created a Clubbell Yoga flow that compliments the skills presented in the workout. In this way, you learn a skill separately, then integrate it into Flow with a weighted mini-Clubbell and without. The results are phenomenal.
In one session, you have worked every muscle in your body, trained for more motor control and released bound tension through dynamic yoga based movement. Only a day and a half left to get Primal 12 at the promotional price, so don't delay. For the cost of one personal training session, you get months of workouts and flows. w/ Scott Sonnon
No one likes to fail. Failure sucks. It hurts, it stings and can be very tough to recover from.
Looking backward is not something I do often, but now that Primal 12 is finally released and the launch is coming to a close, it feels like time for reflection.
I remember during the Primal 12 video shoot, I had to cancel two certification seminars and I felt like a huge failure. I cried, big weeping tears. Taking some leave after having my baby really slowed the momentum of Clubbell Yoga at the time, because I was very focused on my newborn (as any new mother would be). Looking back this was a huge blessing in disguise.
Being grounded at home gave me time to develop Primal 12, and work out all of the details with my colleague Alaina Hage Sawaya. We took our time figuring out the workouts (and our babies even came and watched). I remember practicing them with Brie Helmuth too at Alaina's studio. Every time we came together for Primal 12, the energy came alive. Music was blasting, we were smiling, we knew we had a challenge, and we knew we could do it together.
Then we shot the footage in a local yoga studio over several weeks. Then came editing. Then more editing, and writing and editing. A labor of love.
Primal 12 started to come alive when I restructured my Certification seminars and offered the AWAKEN/CONDITION/PRACTICE format. Then things started shifting. This was no longer yoga with a Clubbell in a few poses, this was athletic conditioning for yoga based movement. This was cutting edge. My tribe began to grow, from NYC to Seattle to London and Budapest... We started getting press requests from national magazines. I got to teach at Wanderlust Festival in Whistler, the biggest yoga festival in the world. Things were moving... and I became very aware of how this process works.
~You will fail at things from time to time. It is inevitable. You may have a series of failures. But how you react to these failures is what sets you apart from the rest. ~
Fast forward to the launch of Primal 12, which is coming to a close (promotional price will be offered for a very short time now). I have learned a ton in the launching process as well.
***In this line of work [teaching yoga to the masses], you are only as good as your team.****
Luckily, I have an amazing tribe of creative, inspiring, funny, balanced individuals as instructors, students, clients and coaches that keep things fresh every single day.
No two days are the same. Ever. I walk into my studio at 6am, and am so grateful that I get to teach movement to people, daily. I get to help them cultivate flow. I get to Lead from the Front, to help them overcome their fears and take them where they didn't know they could go. That is what this work is about. It's not about the poses, or being good at yoga. It is about connecting with people in the world so that they can learn to live the best version of themselves.
I am incredibly grateful for all of the students who have supported both Primal 12 and Clubbell Yoga, whether from their living room, or watching on youtube, coming to class, coming to seminars or workshops, or helping with the launch. I am grateful for all of the solid feedback from respected collegues all around the world. I am touched by the support for even my local classes, everyone is so stoked. Genuinely stoked. And it makes me stoked to be able to be a part of something so cool, and meaningful in people's lives. Gratitude. Thanks coach Scott Sonnon for your role in leading me as well, as I would not be the coach I am today without your leadership and inspiration.
Primal means Fundamental.
The new program, Primal12 is simply using CST and Yoga to train the twelve most fundamental motor control patterns in human movement. Now Primal is also a big buzz word in the fitness industry right now...
It seems that we are returning back to our 'primal' roots and rediscovering what it means to move like our ancestors did. Though this transition toward Primal Movement seems new, I have first hand experience that it most certainly isn't.
Rewind to ten years ago when I attended my first CST seminar with my Coach Scott Sonnon. I was a very green (new) personal trainer who was previously taught in my other certifications, to train people to lift weights for two sets of 15 repetitions. I was to alternate antagonistic muscle groups, and super set these exercises to build a lean body. What happened was boredom, overtraining, and no one learned to move better. Then I came to a CST seminar. My world got turned upside down.
Scott Sonnon was one of the only people in the industry at the time (if not the only) who was teaching these primal (fundamental) movements. It was very very foreign and weird and almost hard to wrap by brain around. But, like any dedicated student would, I trusted him and kept on trying. Scott is honestly a pioneer in the fitness industry, and usually is about 5 to 10 years ahead in terms of training systems.
So when you see Primal 12, and you recognize that this is something extremely different, something that the fitness and YOGA industry has probably never seen before... that is because is truly is the first. It is the first program to train primal movement patterns, yoga based movement, and Clubbell Yoga...
Scott spent years in Russia studying in a biomechanics think tank to create CST, I was lucky enough to get the distilled version from him directly and put it in my own laboratory (my studio). He gave me tools to craft this program, and I put my heart and sweat into making it just right for you. It now leaves its mark on the timeline of fitness/yoga.
I hope you enjoy Primal 12 and I encourage you to stay ahead of the curve. Learn from teachers that inspire you, that keep developing their ideas, that support you in pursuing more knowledge.
